Pioneering dubstep DJ & producer Benga’s back with a new EP.
The Croydon-born artist and original Big Apple Records crew member took a 2 year hiatus from the music business after mental health issues brought on by drugs and excessive touring. He’s back on form, moving forward with an 3-track EP forthcoming on his own Benga Beats label. Using music as an escape from his troubles and concentrating his efforts on a fresh style, the new “future funk” sound looks back to a track the producer made with Artwork at the beginning of 2015 called Shut it Down, blending elements of dubstep, techno, acid and funk music.
In his own words: “It’s been two years and I have grown a lot, and I now know what’s important: music. I’m back and I think my sound is the most ‘me’ it’s been since Diary of an Afro Warrior and I’m super excited to play it and reconnect with all of the people who have supported me. Let’s have a good year!”
The Afro Warrior makes a welcome return to DJing next month, playing for Tectonic’s showcase at fabriclive on the 12th of February.
The Future Funk EP is out 26th February 2016 via Benga Beats. A limited edition 140g black 12″ will accompany the digital release of the EP, packaged in full colour spined sleeve designed by Ben Cullen-Williams and with photography by Dan Wilton.
