Citizen – ‘Trax’ EP – Love Fever Records

Citizen aka Laurence Blake, originally a Nottingham native who is now based in London, returns home to Love Fever Records, this time around with the flawless ‘Trax’ EP. Citizen comes armed with plenty 909 kicks, swinging hi hats, and in parts, ventures into his darker side, but somehow finds a way to balance it out with uplifting melodies, executed very well.

‘Everything’ opens the ‘Trax’ EP in a melancholic vibe, however don’t be put off by this, in fact just embrace it. Citizen takes things a little deeper, with the aid of dark rave chords; sharp snares and booming 4×4 sub kicks, resulting in a straight up main room cut, but with an edgy feel.

My favorite pick is ‘Worship & Tribute (Your Love)’, already gaining huge support from the legendary Kerri Chandler, who recently featured it on his guest mix for Heidi’s BBC Radio 1 show. ‘Worship & Tribute (Your Love)’ sees Citizen bringing out an old school piano riff, which assists an insanely catchy soulful vocal hook to great effect.

Finally, ‘Glastique’ provides an appealing synth line, dreamy atmospheric pads, allowing an enchanting vocal to drift along over a solid groove, rounding off this outstanding package – essential purchase.

Citizen looks destined for even bigger things in 2013, with his eagerly awaited ‘So Submissive’ EP coming out soon on MadTech Records, and an LP in the works scheduled for release later on this year.
